2. Solly Baby Wrap. This is the exact one that I used with my last little. It was a game changer for me. So comfortable and he loved it.

3. Helen Ficalora Necklace. These are the sweetest. I have received a new letter charm, in gold, from my husband in the hospital after each of our babies. They are a special keepsake for me that I love and wear almost daily.

4. Pj’s. Who doesn’t love some new comfy pjs!? Especially a new mom.

5. Jcrew House Shoes. New mom or not, everyone needs a pair of these. They are so comfortable.

6. Long Robe. For those late nights, and let’s be honest- just those days you don’t want to do anything but snuggle your baby- throw on this long, cozy robe and call it a day!

7. Quinny Stroller. Who says a stroller can’t be cute and functional? This one is amazing. Wish it had been around when I originally bought one!

8. Halo Sleep Sacks. These are the best. No fear of your little one getting caught up in their blanket or coming un-swaddled. I used these with both of my kids. I love them.

9. mamaRoo. I had this for my last baby and he loved it- as did I. It stayed in our living room and was the perfect place for him to catch a snooze where I could see him.

10. Bassinet. How gorgeous is this one!?

11. LWPH Crib Sheets & Quilts. I know this sweet chic and her work is amazing! I designed my son’s entire room off of one of her crib sheets I fell in love with. I dare you to not buy several things from her shop when you visit it- such fun prints and colors.

fast holiday sweets and treats

Tis the season of holiday sweets, treats & parties! If you are anything like me, you have overbooked yourself this holiday season- between kid’s parties, friend’s parties, bunko nights, work gatherings, christmas shopping & wrapping, holiday traveling… the list goes on.

So, I’ve rounded up some yummy, but FAST, go-to treats for all those times you need to take a cookie to a school party, christmas gifts to the neighbors, or just having the girls over for a night of fun! They are all delicious, fast to make, and super cute and festive.

Soft Maple Sugar Cookies

img_7524

Ok, now these probably take the longest out of all the treats on here- BUT- it is so simple of a recipe, and it makes 3 dozen cookies! That’s enough for school Christmas party treats AND treats for the neighbors.

Cookies

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon (or, if you can find it, maple cinnamon sprinkle)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp pure maple syrup

Maple Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 1/2 stick butter, softened
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup (add more for a richer maple flavor- then just add more powdered sugar- you won’t screw it up!)
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar (and more or less for proper consistency- again, you won’t mess it up!)

Cream together butter, sour cream, sugar and powdered sugar, in a mixer, until smooth. Add in the vanilla, cinnamon, and eggs. Stir on low speed until mixed. Then, add in baking soda and continue to mix- on a low speed- for 10-20 seconds.

One cup at a time, add in the flour. Once all flour has been added and incorporated, form dough into a ball and knead the dough on a flour covered surface until it is no longer sticky. You may need to add/sprinkle flour to the dough.

Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough between 1/4 and 1/2 inch thick. Then, use a 2.5 inch diameter circle cookie cutter and cut out circles- place them on a parchment covered cookie sheet.

Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

For the frosting- beat butter, cream cheese, vanilla, maple syrup, and powdered sugar with a mixer. Beat until smooth. Add more maple syrup or powdered sugar for desired consistency. Using the back of spoon, frost each cookie and sprinkle with cinnamon. I dare you not to just dip the cookies in the frosting all. day. long.

Christmas Rice Krispie Treat Balls

img_7526

Ingredients

  • Kellogg’s Rice Krispies Cereal
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Butter
  • Red food coloring
  • Green food coloring
  • Christmas sprinkles

To get the three colors- you will need to make three batches. The easiest way to do it is get out 3 large glass bowls. In each bowl put 3 tbsp of butter. Then, do the next set of instructions all for one bowl before moving on to the next.

Heat the butter in the bowl for 45 seconds, or until melted. Then pour in 3 cups of mini marshmallows. Toss until coated in the butter. Microwave for 1minute and 30 seconds- stirring after 45 seconds. Once finished, stir until smooth. Now, add the food coloring of your choice- or none if doing the white ones – mix until the color is vibrant and incorporated. Next, add 3 cups of Rice Krispies cereal. Once mixed, wait until it is cool enough to not burn you but warm enough to still be malleable. Butter your hands and roll them into balls!

Repeat these steps with the remaining 2 bowls adding whatever color or sprinkles you want!

Spiced Apple Cider

img_7528

Ash made this for me last time I was in SF with her- and now I have it almost every day!

Ingredients

In a large pot- add 2 parts apple juice to 1 part cranberry juice. Put a few tablespoons of the spices in the mulling ball and let simmer in the juices for 20 minutes. Remove the spices and enjoy! SO simple, so yummy, and makes your house smell AMAZING! Keep it in the fridge and just reheat when you want some more!

Peanut Butter Balls

img_7527

Ingredients

  • 2 cups creamy peanut butter- get the GOOD stuff, not the healthy 😉
  • 4 1/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • Dark, milk, or semi sweet chocolate or a mixture of some of them! I do half milk/half semi sweet
  • Shortening

Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper and set aside. Mix the peanut butter, powdered sugar, butter and vanilla on high speed until smooth and creamy. Form into small balls (remember they will be even bigger once they have chocolate on them, so don’t make them too big!) and place on the baking sheet. Once you have formed all the balls, place them in the freezer.

Once they are frozen- it’s time to make your chocolate. Dump two bags of chocolate chips (dark, semi, milk- or a combo!) into a glass bowl with 2 tablespoons of shortening. Microwave on 50% power for 1 minute- remove and stir thouroughly. Repeat doing shorter intervals until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Take a box of tooth pics and stick one in a frozen peanut butter ball, dip it in the chocolate and tap on the side of the bowl to let the excess chocolate drip off. Place it on the parchment/wax paper and use another toothpick to help push it off. Then dip another toothpick into the chocolate and use it to cover the top of the peanut butter ball that is was not covered in chocolate- give it a little swirl to make it look fancy if you’d like 😉 Repeat steps with remaining ones! Put in fridge to harden. If your chocolate starts to harden- just pop it back in the microwave!

Santa Crunch Popcorn

img_7525

Ingredients

  • 10 cups of Popcorn- Use the microwavable bags!! These are time saver recipes!
  • salt
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 cups Mini marshmallows
  • Mini M&M’s – red/green
  • Pretzel M7M’s – red/green
  • Christmas sprinkles

Pop 2 bags of popcorn in the microwave and pour it out on a wax paper or parchment paper covered surface. Pick out the unpopped kernels- no one wants to bite into one of those!

Next, in a glass bowl, add 3 tbsp of butter- melt in the microwave, approximately 45seconds. Stir. Add 3 cups of mini marshmallows. Toss to coat. Microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds- stirring after 45 seconds. Once finished in the microwave, stir until smooth. Pour it over your popcorn! Gently fold the popcorn and marshmallow mixture together with your hands or a spoon. Then add the candies & sprinkles! Let it cool and then enjoy!

Hot Chocolate Fudge

img_7484

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Chocolate chips
  • 1 can (14oz) + 4 tbsp Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 1 cup White chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 cups Mallow Bits (mini hot chocolate marshmallows)

In a glass bowl, combine the chocolate chips with the 140z can of sweeter condensed milk. Microwave for 1 minute. Stir until smooth adding 15 seconds at a time back in the microwave if not smooth. Pour into a foil lined 8×8 pan that has been greased with butter. Combine the white chocolate chips and 4 tbsp of sweetened condensed milk in a glass bowl and microwave for 30 seconds- stirring and heating until smooth. Spread this mixture on top of the other chocolate layer. Top with mini marshmallows- then gently press down. Refrigerate until set and then cut into bite sized pieces!

gift guide. for the kids.

Screen Shot 2016-11-23 at 9.53.08 AM.png

1. Jellycat Stuffed Animals. My daughter was given this bunny from her Nana and has slept with it every night since almost birth. When my son came along and tried to steal the beloved ‘bunbun’ from her, he got his own monkey. Safe to say it hasn’t left his side since the day he got it.

2. Code a Pillar. My husband is obsessed with anything to do with coding. He thinks it is super important for our kids to at least understand it. This is such a fun new concept and way to teach kids and they won’t even know!

3. Super Hero Action Figures. I LOVE all the female super heros that are out this year! So does my daughter. She spotted these at Target from a mile away.

4. Vtech Watch. With all the adults around getting high-tech watches, of course kids are asking for the same! I don’t know about you, but mine won’t be getting any Apple watch any time soon- so, instead, get them this fun kid’s version!

5. Root Viewer. We love gardening at our house and it has made our kids love their vegetables because they get excited about planting, watching them grow, and then cooking them! This is a neat way to show them what is going on under the ground.

6. SelfieMic. A microphone and selfie stick!? Need I say more?

7. Super Hero Robes. With all the super hero buzz going around, these super hero robes are sure to be a big hit- especially at our house!

8. Go Kart. Every kid wants a go-kart at some point, and I can see why after checking out this fun one!

9. Adidias Superstars. My kids love to match me, and I like giving some ‘practical’ gifts for Christmas- so why not some cute shoes like these.

10. Peek Shirts. I am obsessed with Peek. They have the cutest kid’s clothes.

11. Xbox One. Have you met an older kid who doesn’t want an Xbox?!

12. Soccer Goals. Grab two of these and you will have endless fun in your backyard!

13. Strider Balance Bike. These are a great way to teach a kid how to ride a bike without training wheels- and they won’t even know they are learning!

gift guide. for the runner.

Screen Shot 2016-11-23 at 8.55.45 AM.png

1. Garmin Forerunner. This is the best watch out there- in my opinion. It has just enough bells and whistles to tell you what you need to know without overloading your brain with way too much information.

2. Feetures Socks. These are my favorite. I have yet *knock on wood* to get a blister in these socks. They are thick enough in the right spots to protect your feet, but thin enough to not take up valuable space in your shoes!

3. Nike Compression Shorts. You know my love for these shorts. Say goodbye to any weird seem chaffing!

4. Orion Mesh Leggings. I love a fun pair of workout pants. These have mesh and lattice detailing!

5. Lululemon Shorts. I have several pairs of these. There are so many fun colors to choose from. They are just a classic workout short.

6. Nike Running Vest. This vest is so light and yet so warm. I have no idea how they do it! It is the perfect layer or stand alone on those cold days.

7. Yurbuds Headphones. You probably know by now that I don’t run with wireless headphones. It’s just one more thing for me to charge, and I honestly haven’t found any that I like as much as these. I’ve used them for 4 years now.

8. Nike Visor. When sunglasses alone won’t cut it, I throw on this.

9. Nike Sunglasses. I searched for awhile for the perfect running glasses. I love how light weight these are and they don’t have any weird pressure points that could end up giving me a headache. My husband actually started stealing these from me because he liked them more than his.. and then lost him! I think I know what I better be getting in my stocking!

10. Believe Training Journal. I’ve talked about this journal before. I enjoy being able to look back on my progress … especially during those running slumps where you feel like you just aren’t progressing or you can’t run anymore.

11. Flipbelt. I have turned countless people on to these! Forget those annoying bouncing belts or those arm bands that rub. This is a game changer.

12. Sarah Marie Designs tees. I love her stuff. She has great tees, sweatshirts, and a new varsity inspired jacket that is too cute!

13. Nike Running Jacket. Another win for Nike. A thin, but warm running jacket.

14. Lululemon duffel bag. This is the perfect gym bag. Room for everything and super cute!

gift guide. for the man.

Screen Shot 2016-11-23 at 10.15.17 AM.png

1. Stance Socks. My husband loves their socks. Fun, but manly, colors and patterns to go with everything. Plus, I love to steal them.

2. Garmin Fenix 3. For the athlete in your life- this watch does it all. Swim tracking, biking, and running.

3. Apple TV. We have one and love it. Makes it so easy to hook our phones up to the tv, or just watch our favorite shows.

4. Magazine Subscriptions. I love giving magazine subscriptions. I order the subscription, buy one of the magazines and attach it to something that is relevant to it. Example: order Runners World Magazine and roll it up inside a new pair of shoes!

5. Jcrew Flannel. I don’t dare usually try and buy my husband clothes- he is way too picky; but, these are alway a winner. So, every year he gets a few of these under the tree.

6. UE Boom 2 Bluetooth Speaker. We love blasting music around the house or taking it with us to a family function. This is a great one for the quality and price.

7. Apple iPhone 7 Battery Case. For the man who works from his phone 247, this battery case will help keep him from having a panic attack when his phone drops to the dreaded red zone.

8. Wireless Headphones. No guy likes wires everywhere- especially when working out.

9. Jack Black Skin Care. A classic and there is a reason for it. Men love their products.

10. Amazon Dot. We don’t have one of these, but I am going to have to change that!

11. Beer Clubs. If your guy likes/drinks beer or scotch, then give a ‘club’ gift where they send new ones for him to try every month!

12. Tile. I am sick of looking for my man’s keys every time he blames me for losing them hah So, attach this to them and you will never lose them again!

tree farm

With Thanksgiving behind us, it’s time to decorate for Christmas!  First stop – find the perfect tree.  This year we made a day of it and drove down to Rancho Siempre Verde to choose and cut our tree.  Then before heading back we stopped at Pie Ranch for some festive provisions and topped the day off with a late lunch at Sam’s Chowderhouse.

If you live in or around the San Francisco Bay Area, I highly recommend this little day trip!  And if you’re not in the Bay Area, have a google and find a tree farm near you.  Get outdoors and smell the fresh pine!

Rancho Siempre Verde is about an hour drive south of San Francisco.  Having researched several tree farms online (here’s a good summary of local tree farms), I chose RSV because for what it lacked in kitsch it more than made up for in beautiful surroundings, tree swings, and marshmallow roasting.  And it didn’t hurt that there’s a pie shop right next door.

wearing: dasher top, ruche long sleeve tee, hat, scarf, hunter travel boots

There are several tree swings scattered around the property that are just as much fun for adults as they are for kids.  And if you don’t feel like cutting your own tree there’s a selection of pre-cut ones ready to go.

We opted to cut our own of course.  I gave sawing a go, but called in Pavel to finish the job.  Once cut you can either haul it yourself to the baling station, or have one of the workers give you a tractor pulled hay ride to pick it up and haul it back.  (TIP:  Trees look smaller out in the wild than they do in your house… found that out when we got home.)

tf-tree-bale

There are also wreaths for sale, or you can opt to make your own!  Making a wreath from scratch was a first for me, and like it or not – I’m pretty proud of it!

There is an bonfire going for marshmallow roasting, and feel free to bring your own sausages to roast too!  And mind the sign warning that unattended children will be given an espresso an a puppy.

Next door to the tree farm is Pie Ranch where we picked up a fresh baked apple pie, an mini honey nut oat pie, and some shortbread cookes.  Hey, it’s the holidays!  They also have a variety of fresh produce, pickled vegetables, and preserves.

Sam’s Chowder House is one of our favorite spots.  It happened to be raining by the time we got there, but on fair weather days it’s nice to sit outside by one of the firepits and dine while overlooking the ocean.  And they have s’more kits if you feel like making your own dessert!

Though the rain kept us inside at Sam’s this trip, it gave us a beautiful rainbow on the drive home.

tf-rainbow

The scenic route.  All 3 of these places are located on Cabrillo Highway aka Highway 1 and the drive has some terrific views of the Pacific Ocean.  There are also tons of produce stands and wine tastings along the way – so take your time and make a day of it!

Happy Holidays!
