Ash’s obsessions

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray – My hair is relatively fine and naturally wavy and this salt spray is great for giving it volume and texture.  It is great for air-drying, or adding oompf when heat styling.  Bumble and Bumble also makes a “Surf Infusion” spray that has been really popular, but it has some shine oil in it that can weigh hair down and so seems better suited for thicker hair types.

SANPELLAGRINO Blood Orange sparking fruit beverage.  I saw these at Trader Joe’s over the weekend and picked up a pack of the Blood Orange and the Limonata to try.  I adore everything about them.  The delicate bubbles, slightly tart taste, and super cute packaging.  I will definitely be buying more.

You’re the Worst – Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Hulu, and new episodes on FXX starting August 31st (ie. TODAY!!).  I stumbled upon Season 1 on Hulu last year and watched all of the episodes within a week.  Season 2 appeared on Hulu last month and I binge watched those as well.  I would describe this show as a somewhat dark romantic comedy.  Jimmy is a narcissistic brit, Gretchen is a cynical people-pleaser, and together they hate on relationships all the while falling into one.  Jimmy’s PTSD roommate Edgar and Gretchen’s quirky BFF Lindsay round out the stellar cast.  If I had cable I would throw a watch party for the tonight’s Season 3 premier, but alas I’ll have to wait for it to be available on Hulu.

Seafolly Mest about High Neck One Piece Maillot Swimsuit – I have been coveting this swimsuit all season! I have a feeling it will be added to my collection very, very soon.

Felicity & CoCo Stripe Ponte Fit & Flare Dress – This is right up my alley. Classic shape. Classic colors. You can’t go wrong!

Almay Longwear & Waterproof Makeup Remover Pads – I have used these for probably close to 8 years now. By far the best waterproof makeup remover. Easy, not overly oily or greasy, and gets any makeup off with ease- no painful scrubbing!

labor day weekend

at Yosemite National Park – too afraid to let go of the railing

Labor Day is Monday, September 5th, and for many of us that means a glorious 3 day weekend is ahead!

According to the Department of Labor, Labor Day is a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.  So cheers to you working women and men!  How are we going to celebrate?  I’ve got some ideas…

Shopping!  Who doesn’t love a good sale?  And there will be no shortage of stores having them.  Grab some girlfriends for a morning brunch, then hit up your favorite stores for some retail therapy.  News outlets are already reporting on sales to come, and stay tuned for a Juniper Lemons labor day sales post!

Hike.  Fall is sneaking up on us fast, so enjoy what’s left of summer by getting out in the nature.  Not sure where to go walk around?  Check out All Trails for some ideas!  Simply enter a city, park, or trail name and voila – happy trails!

Picnic.  Similar to the hiking option, but a bit less athletic.  Step 1: go to Trader Joe’s and load up on cheese, salami, grapes, wine, and a baguette.  Step 2: load the items in a cute picnic basket (because presentation matters) with any necessary utensils, cups, and napkins.  Step 3:  gather your family, friends, and/or dog and find a sunny spot with a view and let the celebrating begin.

BBQ.  The quintessential summer gathering.  Whether hosting at your home or meeting up in a park, BBQs are the best.  I can almost smell the chicken, burgers, and corn on the grill.  Call some friends and fire it up!

Have a great long weekend!

xoxo

one foot in front of the other

If you have never run, have always run, or just like to cheer someone along who is chasing a finish line – welcome to our “energy” section of juniper lemons. Here we will discuss all things fitness, health and running! I’m a lover of quiet morning runs, dark late night runs, getting lost on a trail, and running with friends. I did not start running “fun runs” until after my first baby. Ashley talked our mom and me into signing up for Nike Women’s half marathon- and we did.

Since then, I have run 13 half marathons, 2 full marathons, countless 10k/5ks and various other ‘fun runs’. I’m not a PR chaser, but more of a social runner. It wasn’t until recently that I got the itch to see if I could accomplish a goal of mine- to cross the Boston Marathon finish line. I am currently in the middle of training for my next marathon, St George Marathon, and this will be the first time I have followed (loosely) a training program. More on the program to come!

marathon.jpgI run for me, as an outlet. It’s my time. I also run to inspire my kiddos. I am hoping to show them that they can aspire to anything they set their minds to and to not quit despite having to put in hard work and maybe failure!

BFHU – raw edge dining table

I have always coveted raw edge dining room tables. That being said, the one I found and fell in love with was $25,000! Can you believe that? So, I set out to make my own, to seat 8- and under $2,000!

I first needed to find the wood slab. I started by of course googling “raw wood slabs” in my area. This came back with no luck. I then got the idea to call local cabinet shops. Sure enough, a cabinet shop near me had several different types of raw wood slabs! This is the part of the project that can cause you to stay in budget or go way over. Depending on the type of wood and size, you can find one for $500-5,000. I went over and found one in my budget (under $1,000)  and roughly the proper size. They offered to cut it down a little bit on one end- which was helpful. It needed to be fully dried- so they continued to do that for me, and a few weeks later he had me come take a look.

It had a few splits in the wood that needed to be filled with resin, and the owner of the shop also recommended re-enforcing them with “bowties” so it would not continue to split. At the time I was doing this, I was very pregnant so a few of the tasks- like the resin, I could not do (heavy duty chemical). So, for a fee of about $300, they completed the bowties and resin for me.

When I finally managed to get the slab home, I took a power sander to it and smoothed it down- both sides. You can imagine my husband’s face every time I needed it turned over. It is HEAVY! I removed some of the natural bark along the edges, but chose to keep some of it to make sure and give it that raw-edge feel.

Once sanded, it was time to seal it. The owner of the cabinet shop suggested using Waterlox. It is what he uses in his shop. This required several coats with a foam brush, and in small sections- both sides of the table and along the edges. The directions on the Waterlox website are excellent- please refer to those for more detailed instructions. Make sure to be in a well ventilated area that is free from dust! You don’t want little particles getting in your sealer. I also recommend a mask- this stuff is STRONG.

After it was completely dry, I installed the legs. The legs I designed with a gentleman I found on etsy. There are several vendors on there willing to make metal legs- It just depends on the style and price point you are going for. We worked together to figure out the best legs to give me the look I wanted, while staying in budget, and most importantly supporting the massive slab.

Final cost: approx. $1700.

I get more compliments on this table than any other piece of furniture in my house. I love being able to say I made it! I have now used the table for close to 3 years. I am proud to say that it doesn’t show a bit of wear- and that is saying something, with two little kids eating, coloring, and crafting on it daily!

running must-haves

Running Must-Haves

A few of my favorite go-to items for running:

Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 9.21.57 PM

1. Nike women’s feather light 2.0 visor: Nothing worse than squinting for an entire run!

2. Flip belt: This is by far the best way to carry everything while running. I have tried many and this has stood the test of time for 3+ years now as my favorite.

3. Fuelbelt slice palm water bottle: I can’t stand carrying water around my waist while running- this is perfect.

4. Nike women’s 3″ pro cool compression shorts: These are my treadmill shorts. I haven’t had the courage yet to wear them out yet; but, if you find me on my treadmill, this is what I will have on! No chaffing!

5. Lululemon speed short- 4 way stretch: Overall a great length, fit, and neat colors.

6. Champion women’s show off sports bra: Reasonably priced for a high-support bra without underwire! I can’t stand a non-racerback sports bra or one with underwire. Win-Win.

7. Sweaty bands head bands: Bought one of these years ago at a running expo and haven’t turned back. No slipping!

8. Clif blocks energy chews- margarita with salt: My stomach cannot handle Gu’s. I’ve tried. These, however, taste great without being overpowering and are easy on my sensitive stomach.

9. Yur buds: Another running expo purchase years ago that I still rave about. I’ve tried blue tooth headphones, over the ear headphones, you name it- but I always come back to these.

10. Garmin forerunner 220: Great price for a gps watch and does absolutely everything I want a running watch to do. Extremely user friendly. It also syncs up with Nike+, which I love because that is how Ashley and our mom and I keep tabs on each other’s running! More posts on this watch in the future for sure!

happy running!

Mirabelle Tee  I bought this top during the last sale at Anthropologie and it quickly became one of my favorites. It is now on sale, PLUS an extra 25% off AND free shipping!

adidas Originals Trefoil Cap  Baseball hats are a staple in my closet, and this one has been added to the rotation. Dirty hair? Rushing to pick up my kids? Soccer Game? Baseball hat. Love the throw back to the original adidas logo.

Rupa Legging (Gray) I was introduced to this company this weekend while in San Francisco. I met the founder/owner and had a good chat with him about his new company, Evolve- Love in Action. What they are doing by giving back,  I love. I live in workout clothes, so I had to give them a try. I’m sold. More to come on these pants, my review, and this company, soon!
