feeling blue?

Feeling blue this month?  You’re not alone.  feeling-blue-1

January is hailed by many as the most depressing month of the year.  The holiday spirit fades, work resumes, gift-giving bills arrive, resolutions are already being broken, and the weather is ick.  Bummer, huh?…

Snap out of it!  Easier said than done sometimes, I know…  Here are some things to try to help break away from the winter blues –

  • Do something for someone else.  It’s the unselfish selfish thing to do!  Not only does helping someone else give you the feel goods, but it can also help to remind you of the blessings you have.  Sample activities:  play with a shelter dog; offer to babysit for free;  help a friend with spring cleaning;  take a friend/relative/mentor to dinner and listen to them.
  • Tackle a project.  A project, big or small, can give you a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and pleasure.  All good things.  Sample activities:  plant a garden (you can start with seedlings indoors until the weather improves); get a head start on spring cleaning; learn how to build a website or write a blog.
  • Go for a walk.  It’s free, relatively easy, and the benefits are touted all over the WWW – everything from clearing your head to combating depression.  Go ahead and have a google.  Some even claim that going for a walk may be better than going to the gym.  So don’t beat yourself up if you’ve already neglected that new  gym membership, have a walk instead.
  • Commit to doing things you like to do.  It is so important to set aside time on a regular basis (at least monthly, but weekly is better) to fill with plans that you will look forward to — like coffee with friends!  Make a list of fun little things to do that can be done anytime, and start putting them on the calendar.  I’ve talked about this before (here and here), and I continue to put it into practice.  Make the time to do the fun little things.
  • Express gratitude.  Make a point to actively express your thankfulness in the moment and watch the magic happen!  Whether it be to your spouse, friends, family, co-workers, a barista, bank teller, etc. – verbally express your sincere gratitude, even for the little things.  You may be surprised that doing so will help you realize all you have, and it makes the person receiving your thanks feel good too!  Win win. #bethankful
  • Make real friends.  Yes professional networks are good for career building, but it’s important to cultivate good friends outside of work.  And social media ‘friends’ don’t count.  I’m talking real relationships with people outside the office who you actually see face-to-face, enjoy hanging out with, and chit chat about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness.  If you have a solid group of real friends, then cultivate those friendships- get together when you can, and stay in touch on the regular.  If you don’t have a solid group of real friends – invest the time and energy to make some now!  Need a push?  Research has shown that not having strong social relationships with real friends significantly increases your risk for mortality.  That means death people.  Yikes.  Go get yourself some awesome friends, it’s worth it all around.

Ash’s obsessions

I’m headed to a wedding next month and it’s got me wanting some new fun shoes.  (As if I needed an excuse.)  I’m thinking some bright suede chunky heels may be on the horizon.  The suede keeps it season appropriate, the color makes them fun, and the chunky heel keeps them comfy.

Aquazzura Wild Fringed Suede Sandals.  I’m eyeing these in the pomegranate color that’s on sale here.

Loeffler Randall Luz Tassel Sandals. Love the bright color and sassy tassels.

Howsty Mimosa Lasercut Suede Heels.  I tried these on at Anthropologie last week in orange.  Super cute and comfy!

ILY Couture Heart Sweater. I love this sweater. Just enough holiday spirit for Valentine’s Day without going overboard.

WAYF Peplum Top.  The girly details of this top make me swoon. The high neck, sleeves, peplum bottom, and perfect lace make it a definite yes in my book.

ASOS Pom Sandals.  I know it is still snowy in most places, but I’m dreaming of a beach vacation. These sandals are perfect for the sandy beach days I am envisioning!

carob almond truffles

Once upon a time, I was a raw foodie(ish).  And some of the delicacies I used to not-cook still show up in my kitchen on the regular, like these yummy carob almond truffles.  Super simple, relatively quick, and arguably healthy – what’s not to love?

img_9553

Carob Almond Truffles

2 cups almond flour
1/2 cup carob powder (or cacao works too)
pinch of sea salt
3/4 cup agave nectar
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup shredded unsweetened coconut
(*plus another 1/2-1 cup shredded coconut set aside in a bowl for finish*)

In a large bowl combine the above ingredients (dry ones first!) until it reaches a doughlike consistency.  Then use your hands to roll the dough into balls.  And finally, roll the balls in the bowl of shredded cocount to give them a pretty white coating.  Serve as-is or chilled.

I like to store mine either in the fridge or the freezer, but IMO they’re pretty amazing whether room temp, chilled, or frozen.

Note:  I usually make these with carob powder, but every now and then I substitute cacao powder.  I find the cacao gives them a richer flavor.  For a comparison of carob versus cacao, give this article a read.

Enjoy!

Nike Roshe Two Sneaker. It’s January- which means I bet most of you, like me, created some sort of fitness resolution. Well, nothing gets me motivated more than a new shoe to wear while working out!

2017!!

nyeparis

It’s here, it’s finally here!  A new year, a fresh start, an opportunity to reflect on accomplishments of the prior year, make adjustments as needed, and set plans big and small.  Think beyond the new gym membership and commitments to eat better, work out, lose weight, etc., and give yourself some stuff to really look forward to and get excited about!

When I was a teen, somewhere I read or heard that happiness results from having someone to love, something to do, and something to look forward to.  So for this year’s resolutions I resolved to bring more happiness into my life, and I created a simple three part outline to get me started on a follow through plan of action.

Resolved:  Bring more happiness into my life
(because who couldn’t use some more of that?!)

1. Spread the love.

Having someone to love can be a significant other, family, friends, or a pet.  It can also include love for your community and helping others.  Make an ongoing effort to show those you love just how much they mean to you.

2. Plan a project.

Having something to do can give you a sense of purpose, accomplishment, pleasure – or all of the above – depending on what it is.  If your day job satisfies you, then you’re set here.  If not, plan a project!  Projects can be hobbies, side jobs, working towards a goal, almost anything!

I personally like to have several projects going at once.  My corporate day job is certainly something to do and it pays the bills, but for me (and I suspect many people) that’s not enough.  So for 2017 my projects include growing Juniper Lemons (yay!), and a massive remodel/expansion of our house starting in January!  Both are projects that are engaging in challenging and fun ways, and are completely different from my day job.

3. Bucket list(s).

As for the some things to look forward to, don’t overlook the little things.  By all means do count that annual vacation to Maui if you’re lucky enough to have one, but there are so many smaller things that can be done throughout the year too.  I touched on this earlier in 2016 when I shared my April Bucket List.  Set aside time on a monthly, or even weekly, basis and fill it with plans that you will look forward to.  The plans can be super simple like grabbing a mid-week drink with friends after work, getting coffee with your dog and heading to the park, or a night at the theatre.  So make some plans and get excited.

Cheers to a happy 2017!
